2021 Fellows Spotlight: Anisha Hossain

As a part of the 2021 Royster Lawton Cohort, I had the privilege of interning at a social entrepreneurial company called Hava Inc.

Hava, which translates to “air,” in Hindi, creates air filtration materials so people can breathe safer and cleaner air. Across the world, the lack of clean air has been responsible for increasing health complications. With the onset of COVID-19 accelerating the need for masks with effective filtration systems, Hava is making it possible to find alternatives to N95 masks using a novel material called metal organic frameworks (MOFs).

Through my summer internship, I got first-hand experience with social entrepreneurship. In the present climate, we hear of many for-profit companies that create huge social costs for both our environment and our community. Amidst these enterprises, Hava stood out to me because of its goals to achieve social profit. It was founded with the motivation to benefit society using a business framework. Through creativity and innovation, Hava strives to create a positive social impact for the community. As a market research and business development intern, I researched different industries and companies that would be interested in the air filtration materials that Hava produces. I also helped to identify potential customers and partners that could help us scale and expand our scope beyond masks. I’m very grateful for this chance to learn essential skills from such innovative leaders.

My experience working at Hava and listening to the experiences of my cohort at their respective internships has affirmed my desire to pursue a career that allows me to use my skills to benefit people around me. I really appreciate all the support I have received from my Royster Lawton mentors, especially Laura Toscano, during my journey of exploring social entrepreneurship beyond classroom doors. I look forward to staying involved with the Royster Lawton community and my cohort for the years to come.
