Water and Food Security Interventions
In collaboration with a large NGO, the Center for Social Innovation has evaluated water and food security interventions in Afghanistan and Ethiopia over the last 20 years. The evaluation was based on satellite map data compared to the results from a sociologist who visited the site. Interventions were found to be of greater effectiveness than initially expected. Reduction of the magnitude of flooding, expanded land use for crops, increased soil moisture, and other factors indicate an improvement in the treated areas. There remains room for further improvement, however, in distributing the benefits among different types of farmers, supporting long-term local institutions to manage watersheds, anticipating future needs, having a greater focus on interventions in which this NGO has a comparative advantage, and supporting increased rainfed agriculture.
